“A blog is a ride—it’s an invitation
to come take a journey with me.
And getting instant feedback
from readers is a great motivator
to keep it going.”

Heather Armstong, 35, the writer
behind Dooce.com (one of the digital
world’s longest-running and most
successful blogs), best-selling author,
and most recently, an HGTV
Design Star
guest blogger and collaborator
Her start
“I stumbled on blogs while
working as a Web designer and got
hooked when I realized I could write
about my life and not answer to anyone.
I’ve always liked writing, and blogging
became a way to exercise that muscle.”
The turning point
“When I had a
baby, Web traffic tripled. It felt bizarre:
Thousands of strangers were wishing
me well. And I credit writing through
postpartum depression with literally
saving my life.”
Daily blogging
“There are times when
I’ll write a post in 20 minutes, and times
when it takes me seven hours to craft
something. My success is based on work,
but it’s a lot of work. As any professional
blogger knows, you can’t take a break.”
Her fam ily
“I write openly about my
daughters (Leta, 6, and Marlo, 1), but
experiences with young children—
eating, pooping, defiance— are common.
I’m more protective now that Leta is
getting older and our experiences are
more singular.”
Her style
“When you have short hair,
dangly earrings and statement necklaces
can look really loud. Instead, my signature
accessory is a giant cocktail ring—I have
about 6o! I don’t wear a traditional
wedding ring, but I do wear a cocktail ring
on my left hand to signify that I’m married
(8 years) to my husband, Jon.”
